I would have to say that a consistent pre-shot routine is the most important thing. This way the mental part of each shot ends when you step onto the approach. Once I step onto the approach it all becomes mechanical and I let muscle memory take over. I have already decided on the line I'm going to play, hand position etc and visualized the shot from hand to head pin.
If you play golf you know that the longer you stand over the ball the more likely you are to hit a bad shot. I think the same applies to bowling. The longer you stand on the approach the more chance you have of going brain dead or 2nd guessing yourself.

Maybe this will help you understand what BigDawg is trying to get across. I found it on YouTube and it perty much describes what he is trying explain to you. http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=8c690HTrOiM You'll find that most scratch bowlers have a very similer routine to get focussed.Be very, very, quiet please, I'm hunting ten pins and it's easier when they're not spooked
