  • Higher Revs

I need help with getting higher revs on my ball. I've recently been working hard on getting full extension on my back swing which has increased my ball speed. So any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.

3 things that will kill ball rotation is a weak hand position, squeezing the ball and poor follow through. Make sure your hand and wrist stay firm behind the ball and slightly cupped but not so much that you are under the ball at release.

As far as squeezing the ball... what I do to keep from this is to lightly press the tip of my thumb nail against the back of the thumb hole so the pad of your thumb is not really touching the ball. This gets me out of the ball quickly and consistently.

Watch the high rev PBA guys. They all accelerate through the ball at the bottom of their swing with a semi exaggerated follow through. If you are right handed, try to touch yourself on the back of your right shoulder when you follow through and vise versa if your wrong handed. (sorry, had to go there) This also helps keep your arm swing on plane. If you hit yourself in the head with your follow through you'll know you are coming across your body and trying to help the ball to the pocket. This is going to sound stupid but when I go practice I wear a ball cap because if my arm swing is off I will hit the bill of my cap on my follow through.

Just remember that trying to rev the ball up will 9 times out of 10 have just the opposite effect. Just try to relax and let the ball come off your hand and the revs will take care of themselves.
