  • Help with building a bowling ball arsenal

I am looking for some advice with building a bowling ball arsenal. I bowl 2 times a week and wanted to start bowling some local tournaments this fall. So I am looking for imformation on types of balls and layouts, any advice would be helpful.

    Big subject, many opinions.

Honestly, thats a good question. I would like to know what others would think would make a good arsenal too.

Personally I only have 2 balls I generally use (not including a plastic spare ball), one is a Fury Pearl drilled 3 3/8" stacked and the other is a Twisted Fury with pin 4 1/2" from PAP at 40* to MB. Both needed weight holes and are OOB. They are really strong hooking balls for me and I have used them on many different lane conditions and I've had mostly good results. When I've not had good results was mainly due to poor exacution on my part.

Whenever I have a need for advice I go to a real good friend for very reliable info. He's adviced me on my last few balls and has not steered me wrong yet. There is another ball he'd like me to get, but as everyone else knows, funds for most are limited right now. As soon as I can afford it, I will get it though, along with a drilling recomendation to match my new needs.

Be very, very, quiet please, I'm hunting ten pins and it's easier when they're not spooked

In my opinion you need 4(5 if you use a spare ball) balls to have an effective arsenal. You'll need a heavy oil ball drilled to roll w/ the pin about 3 3/8 from PAP. Flippy layouts are not your friend on oil. Look for a ball with a smaller more compact weight block(low rg). A low RG ball will roll earlier and rev easier. You'll want an aggressive finish on this ball. Maybe 800 abralon. You might check out the BuzzBomb from Lane#1.

You'll need something for drier conditions. Look at some of the weaker pearl balls out there. I would go with a pin to PAP of at least 4 ½"(somewhere around your middle finger depending on your PAP). The closer you get to your track with the pin the less track flare you will see. With less track flare you will get more length. This ball you want a less aggressive surface. I'd hit it with 4000 abralon then polish the crap out of it.

The other 2 balls will fit in between these two. You'll need a good control ball for medium oil with carry down. I like to put the pin under my ring finger with the cg/psa @ 45deg. I'd shoot for about 2000 abralon and adjust as needed as far as surface goes. Take a good look at the Brunswick Ultra Zone for this ball.

The last ball is my fun ball. The kind of ball that stands on it head down lane. I'd look for an aggressive pearl ball. Something like the Break70 Pearl from 900 Global or the Twisted Fury. I'd put the pin over or next to my ring finger and the cg/psa @ about 70deg. This will give you good length and a ton of pop on the back.
