  • A BTM issue idea

A while back I got interested in laying out a ball. I've also seen talk in the forums alot of this like-How thing's are located? Projecting the lines and reversing angles? How to layout the grip on the ball? Is scribing lines better than using a yellow pencil? Whats "Cut to Cut" vs Actual span? etc.

I know alot of people run proshops know this stuff already, but theres alot of bowlers lets say advanced amatuers. Who would like the basic knowledge so they could layout thier own balls or just check how well thier driller did it.

So I started checking online for general information, any videos or such. I found there's not much good or consistent information on the subject.

Yes there are some books, alot are older ones and might not cover the latest techniques. There are also ProShop classess, but they cost alot and are not close alot of the time.

Also while there is information on websites and a few videos. They can be incomplete or just dealing with one aspect and taking for granted you know some basic steps they skip over in the process.

A example two videos on laying out a ball. The videos show balls being layed out using the degree system, but they don't tell you that. First thing they say is mark a reference line, yet don't tell you where.

In this case its from the pin to the mass bias mark. But they dont say that, also what if you dont have a mass bias mark?
(if MB is not marked, draw a line starting at the pin, through the center of Gravity 6 3/4" long and mark this spot for the MB.)

There are some other things too. But this shows that some things are being assumed that you know.

So I thought Bowling This Month should have a mini series or special issue. That covered this "Pro Shop" knowledge, show the latest techniques being used and just basic how the driller does it knowledge.

Also so how to on proper ball resurfacing and the newest products being used.
Like abralon pads I've saw lots of talk about them. "Do use them wet or dry?, how they compare to sandpaper?" etc.

I told this to my pro shop operator and I've learned alot from him. He said that even he would be interested in seeing some articles like this.

Heres some links of examples I found.

This is from Turbo for the ProSect User Guide its about the best I've found.
