I use to bowl alot back in the 70's eight years in a row on a Sat. league then came raising a family. Now I have the time to bowl again and I feel like I stepped out of a time warp. Were did the wooden lanes and the rubber balls go? What the heck happened? Reactive, Proactive, Pearl, Viz-A- Balls even. Cranker's, tweener's, strokers. And to top that off they all have funny shaped things in the middle of the balls. Wow times sure have changed. So here I am now bowling in a new century I picked up two new balls A Hammer Black Widow conventional grip and a Storm secret agent finger tip. All I have to do is learn how to roll them down the ally. Thirty years ago you held your thumb at a 9 or 10 oclock position and shot for the second or third arrow to hit the pocket. Ive been doing ok with these two balls anywere between 150 and 170 broke 200 a couple of times. I just cant get the hang of that dramatic hook everybody is throwing now days. Any hints would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome Back - my first assumption is there is no reason to learn the crank and hook. I, myself am learning to lessen the hook. Trying to play straighter and harder, more angle towards the pocket. Less hand, more control - know where the balls differ from lane to lane - BE CONSISTENT. Practice, Practice, Practice - Good Luck and do what you do - not what everyone else does.

"do what you do - not what everyone else does" That was some of the best advice I can get, Thanks. I just saw everyone else throwing these dramatic hooks and thought that was the way you were supose to do it these days. But doing it my way I throw 30-40 pins better so I guess I'll keep it that way.

bowl within your game and ability
Everyone is addicted to "hook" today. But I ask myself this question: " Do I want to LOOK good or score?" A big hook certainly looks great, but the fact remains that MOST of the players both amateur and pro who excel consistently DO NOT throw a big hook. Case in point: look at how long Walter Ray Williams dominated the PBA TOUR. He certainly is not a hook bowler or a cranker. The name of the game is accuracy and entry angle into the pocket. And spares are so critical! If you can master those three you will score well. There is my 2 cents on this matter!
