  • New Bowler

I've done some bowling in the past but never thought of joining a league until recently. I went to an alley last night and saw that they qualify 1 of 3 who try out for the league. Then I went and bowled a few games to see how I did.

My scores in four games were 131, 142, 134 and (don't ask why) 95.

I guess my question is--how much higher would you suggest that I get my average before thinking of joining a league?

Not sure about your area but here most of the bowling centers offer leagues designed for beginners. We even have a few leagues here that you get a ball, bag and shoes. So check around your area.

Just remember that league night should be fun so be sure you join one that you are comfortable in. Averaging 140 in a league where most of the bowlers are averaging 200 probably wouldn't be very enjoyable and might only add to your frustration when starting out.

I wouldn't worry too much about your scores when deciding to join a league. After all, if you are just starting out, your scores will only get better.

What kind of league was it that you had to try out to join it?

Most houses to get on a league you just go in and see if a team needs anyone or if the league is just starting you go in and see if you can get on a team.

Thanks for your replies. I'll have to see whether the alley near me has a beginners league. Otherwise, I guess I'll keep practicing, see if I can get my scores a bit higher, then try qualifying.

in my opinion - don't be so focused on your score. i've only been bowling for a few years (soon to be 55 yrs old) but rather just have fun. if the league has stupid rules like qualifying - there's got to be many other leagues which friendship and having fun and meeting friends are the priority.

i bowl pretty well but i'll be honest the most fun i have is in the seniors leagues. great people, great stories, great new friends and guess what - 250's each game don't matter. snobish scratch leagues seem to such the fun out of a really great sport.

you will bowl better with more practice, being relaxed and the help of a few lessons isn't a bad idea. But get a few friends and just have some fun. It's nice to say my average is 210 but better to say we had a great time and lots of fun.

            just my opinion
