What the best way to take speed off a ball in order to get it to roll sooner

Slow your roll

You don't necessarily have to slow the ball down to get it to roll quicker. I can get the ball into a quicker roll just by not putting my thumb all the way into the ball.
Another way is to set the ball on the lane quicker. This will increase the amount of time the ball is in contact with the lane so that added friction will cause the ball to roll sooner.
If you absolutely have to slow your ball speed, try slowing your feet instead. Slower speed to the foul line will reduce momentum and produce a lower ball speed. This is assuming you generate ball speed with your legs and torso and not just your arm.Last edited by BigDawg70; 04-03-2008, 02:36 PM.

I agree with Bigdawg and Lite - they both make the perfect point - slow down your ball correctly! (Correctly being the Point). Something I have done this year, is I don't change the way I stand or release the ball, only ball starting positions. I keep my same target angle on all my FBA and Spare shooting. This helps keep my muscles doing the same thing to inprove the muscle memory. This game is all about doing the same thing over and over again. If you start slowing your feet or arm swing down, you may end up pulling or pushing shots if something is out of sync at the foul line and thinking your speed is fine. Starting positions lower and higher make the difference in correctly adjusting speed and timing without messing with your approach and release points.
The best option is speed control - just wish my house had the speed trap, I know at other houses that do, I only throw about 15.5 as a tweener, when I was cranking I was 18 above. Mind you, I',m 5'9" 140 lbs, so I'm not built for cranking. Since I changed, I can throw 15 games in 1 day all in 1 session and feel like I can throw more.
Work within your game, use your best judgement and learn something new everytime you bowl - league or practice. Voice record or write it down in a notebook, every now and then, listen or read what you wrote.

Thanks jhays... by the way does anyone of you injured himself while playing bowling? Like the ball hit your toes...

I'm sure that is a possible to hit your toes. I think smacking your ankle would be more common, I know that I have done this on several ocasions. My wife last summer tore a ligament in her bowling hand, which was very painful (6 months off too hurt her, LOL). So, to answer your question, yes, like with any sport, bowling can be dangerous when rolling a 15# weight down the lane if you don't take care. Thats why many bowlers will warm up by stretching (your whole body), thinking about what your doing, and shadow bowling before going for score. There is not a lot of differense in preperation with bowling compared with any other physical game. You can get hurt just as seriously.Be very, very, quiet please, I'm hunting ten pins and it's easier when they're not spooked

Like Tenpin said, I've hit the inside of my ankle on more than 1 occasion. The last time actually split the skin over the bone. High backswing+high ball speed+ankle= bloody sock.
The worst I've seen is someone who stepped in water (you all know where this is going..) and stuck and fell on the approach. The bad part is he didn't completely let go of the ball. The ball landed on the finger holes with is fingers still in 'em. The ends of his fingers looked like a hot dog in the microwave too long. The weight of the ball split the end of his fingers. Needless to say, I check my slide shoe before I step on the approach.

hey all,
bowling injuries - how timely for a subject! until last week i would have said sore back, pulled flab or blister on toe. hold the phone!!
during last weekend tourny i had a really bad ball! timing was way off - slide foot stuck, dropped the ball early not a lot but just enough during warm up. Massive pain thru remainder of event - and Sunday and Monday.
Tonights xrays - shattered thumb and thumb socket (maybe thats why it hurt so much - do ya think?) - surgery scheduled for this wed. followed by cast and associated BS for 6- 8 weeks of "rehab". so much for finishing winter. but i will bowl summer leagues - damnit.
well all - knock em in the pit in one and spank the leftovers,

As far as injuries go... I'd say that general wear-and-tear is more likely. Things like tennis elbow and tendonitis are fairly common. I have reoccuring ITB tendonitis in my left hip and knee. I've had to change my approach to a more upright style to compensate.

OUCH!!!!! Gees, hold onto the ball and mangle your fingers, dang that hurts just thinking about it. And Chuck, how did you even keep going? I would have imagined your thumb to be the size of banana after that.
Admitedly, my wife kept bowling too. The doc said if she had bowled much longer, she would of most likely have gone in for surgery to reconect her ligament. He told her, "If you hear something go 'POP!!!' it means somethings wrong and you need to stop!!!" I laughed, because thats what I said, then she hit me with her good arm, LOL.
A team mate of mine pulled his bicep at the start of the season and was out for about 4 weeks. The whole top of his arm was black and blue, ugly. He strugled when he returned and was never really able to get back into the swing of it this season.
Like I posted earlier, the worst I've done is smack my anckle so hard I fell to the floor and I thought it was broken. Lucky for me it wasn't, it just turned black and blue, swelled up, and I had to peel the sock off my anckle. Like most bowlers, I pushed through the rest of the night and boy did I pay the next few days. I couldn't hardly walk for 2 or 3 days. An a funny thing after that too, a guy bowling just after me did the exact same thing after laughing and makng fun of me. Needless to say, his anckle wasn't the only thing that hurt after the mens league stopped laughing at him, LOL. Not for the anckle smacking, but for the hard time he gave me. He was one of thoughs guys that relished in others pain and embarisment. True justice never felt so good then and all I did was smile at him too

hey tenpin,
that will teach you to get between your wife and her bowling..getting wacked.
when i buggered my thumb up it just hurt with no swelling until after. i just thought (hoped) it was just a bad sprain. Anyway surgery this morning (big cast) so it's 6 weeks + for rehab. and doing everything with my left hand. i'm gonna get a ball drilled for my left and see what trouble i can get into - that should be fun..
anyway good bowling to all

forget the fun part....
had a short and embaressing open bowling tonight. got an old raffle winning "gamebreaker" drilled for the left hand and had a toss. I HAVE A NEW AND COMPLETELY PURE RESPECT FOR FOLKS WHICH ARE FORCED TO BOWL WITH THE ALTERNATE HAND. 67, 89 AND A WOPPING 112. i had a 12 year old girl on the next lane say "just aim for the one in the middle" -- i was - holly crap - i should have had 2 beers, a vicodine and watched law and order. just kiddings...about the beers.
Very humbled...and missing law and order..
good bowling..............

wow.. what a sudden change in topic!! lol
As far getting the ball rolling earlier.. to add to the suggestions above...
the more you stay behind the ball (less axis rotation), the earlier it will begin it's roll. If you come around the ball (more axis rotation) that later the ball will begin it's roll. However, this also changes your total hook as well..
Sanding the ball will also make it roll earlier where polishing will make it roll later.
But all of these techniques only make minor differences. If you really want the ball to roll earlier, you need to get a more aggressive, dull, and/or Low RG ball.. and drill it for the reaction you want..
hmm.. the worst bowling injury.. I have hit my ankle pretty hard with the ball.. have had mashed fingers between the balls on the rack.. but probably my worst injury was sticking really bad and landing on all fours across the foul line.. tends to hurt both knees and both wrists..
Now, the worst injury i've SEEN in a bowling alley, though not due to actual bowling. One of the maintence guys was cleaning a machine (old AMF machines) and had the table down and was leaning over it w/o pulling the power plug. something cause the cam to trip and the table came up pinning him between the table and the upper chasis. I was up on the concorse talking with the manager at the time and happen to see his legs dangling out the front.. so I ran back there, pulled the power plug and hand-cranked the motor backwards to free him. He had a dint in his forhead about 3/4 inches deep where one of the pin cups was pressing against him. He was lucky, he only had a slight concusion and a cracked rib..
