  • Approaching the shot....

I've heard a lot of ppl talk about what they do on the approach before they tkae their shot - I have a short routine, that is not the same everytime, it varies until I get a feet on my mark and the ball resting in the starting position. 90% of the time, I take a deep breath, exhale, (tapping the ball with my pinky finger) - then just ensures I have my pinky tucked or as close to the ring finger as I can get and I start my approach.

The ideal behind this is, as I have self taught and understand in my mind is to prepare the shot as it was the same - attempting to keep the same speed, rotation, release, etc as close as possible to learn how to move if they need to be made. How much preparation before the shot is necessary or too much? I've starting watching ppl that avg 220+ and see how they do it - but it varies and so do their approaches.

I understand it's what I feel comfortable with - but I'm just scouting out what others see and feel is good for them. I have times when I think too much or not enough and the biggest issue I have is speed - after I throw it, I can tell if too fast or too slow - I use to think I pull the ball a lot - but after 10 games of video taping - the shots I pull are the ones I cut the ball off in my follow through - I marked my frames while I was bowling on my pull shots and push shots to see what I was doing on video at that time. My push shots were caused by my arm swing being bent and not straight at the line. It's so amazing how easy that was to see and correct - The reason I mention this push/pull is: I throw 2 balls now (Tropical Storm and No Mercy). I know my Storm and No Mercy are 7 boards difference with my feet when playing between 5-8, it typically adds 2 boards feet left for every 3 boards deeper (10-15). I have not played these balls any deeper than 15 so I don't know after that. Anyway - I've noticed recently, pulling the ball (Cutting off follow through) occurs more with my no mercy - both 14lbs and drilled to go long. The balls were not drilled at the same time, but were drilled by the same person. When I start cutting off my shots with the NM, I tried my storm and the follow throughs were perfect. I started watching this over a few nights, and this is one thing that stood out - When I don't feel comfortable with the release of my no mercy - I switch to my Storm and it flows. I guess I should have the balls checked for spread or pitch to see if they match. They both feel good on my hand, but my confidence is in the Storm, I know I have play inside but have no room outside. The NM is the exact opposite, I have plenty of room outside, but little cut off area. Does anyone have any insight on this, or maybe point me into an area of a ball in the middle of these 2. I've not an equipment person as I don't really understand coverstock differences, weight blocks and pitches - I leave that to the pro shop - but honestly, the last few visits to my pro shop as been different - I get treated now like I should know exactly what I want and they don't hold my hand through the process of picking and choosing like in the beginning of the year.

After all the mental aspects of the game and listening to my coach and others tell me what I was doing wrong - and then watching myself on video marking frames of pull/push shots, I was able to pick exactly what I was doing.

Everyone have a great summer and good luck on the PBA shots - I start mine June 2, so I'll be spring flinging until then.

My pre-shot routine is to stand back while other guy goes, look at where i want to stand and where i want my ball to go, pick up ball, wipe oil off, make sure i slide good and then try to do what i saw in my mind.
