  • Ball Maintenence

I am a new Bowler and just bought a new Storm Hybrid Ball. I was wondering what the proper methods of cleaning the ball might be or any input into maintaining the ball?

Hi TanSparky.. The best thing to do is wipe the ball down after your done with a good ball cleaner that you can find in your local pro shop, just talk the the shop owner, and he'll recomend a good ball cleaner for you, there are several very good products out there to use..
You can also try some of the home remidies that are used by alot of bowlers..
I use a simple home cleaner, Simple Green.. I pour into a spray bottle 50/50.. half Simple Green.. and half water.. it works great to take the oil, dirt and belt marks off the ball.. there is a bunch that can be used. some use 409 cleaner, I've never tried that though.. Hopefully some others will chime in and can give some more to you.. Hope this helped some.. GOOD LUCK
    Jeff

Whatever you do, don't use rubbing alchohol, a lot of people use it, but it actually takes back end out of the ball.

Hi, does the ball have a dull finish? Pro shops use acetone on balls used on heavy oil.
If it has a shiny finish, use a good ball cleaner, like the Ebonite cleaner. It has an orange smell. Works well.

Personally I would not ever use acetone. Believe it will alter the surface of ball, mainly the pores, that make our wonderful high performance monster hook.

"Alcohol" doesn't take backend out of a ball thats a myth. Alcohol just removes the oil and grime from the surface of the ball. The backend loss comes from the build up oil in the coverstock because the alcohol doesnt draw out the oil.

Tenpinsniper is right dont use acetone. take a piece of clay and poke a bunch of holes in it. Thats what the surface pores of the ball are like. Now take your finger and smooth over the holes, thats part of what happens when you use acetone. Plus it makes the ball softer and it is not USBC approved for use at anytime.

Home products like Alcohol,409,Jolt Detergent,Simple Green,Windex are ok for daily maintance.
I think some of the products made for balls are better. they get into the pores alittle more and evaporate faster & better. like Hook-It,Liquid Nitro,Power House Energizer Cleaner,Reacta Clean,Clean N Dull.

sounds like everyone has a different opinion on this, shoot my ball driller only uses carberator cleaner on his balls lol, It seems to me that each and everyone of these chemical mentioned cause somekind of an adverse affect on the bowling balls coverstock, my advice is stick to the cleaner your manufacturer recommends to use on your particular ball, even though they cost a ton..

Beaver Eater I agree with you the cleaners are a bit pricy but they are made to clean bowling balls, not carberators.

[B]The best thing to do is buy a Bottle of Ebonite Energizer Cleaner. It works great.
