Many bowlers don't recognize the importance of picking up spares, and even those who do typically do not use any real strategy, opting to just throw the ball and hope. Instead of doing this, you should employ the target pin method.

This works great except when you have pins directly behind each other. Then it is better to hook the ball into these pins, especially if you use lighter balls. This gives more room for error and still pick up the spare. If you throw directly at the front pin then you must hit it perfectly straight on. IMHO.
